Details about Kinnerasani Dam

The river flows through the Dandakaran forest, and this reservoir forms an area of ​​635 square kilometres full of wildlife, which is also known as the Kinnerasani Wildlife Sanctuary. The dam is 24 kilometres from Kothagudem and 12 kilometres from Palvancha, where the Kothagudem Thermal Power Station is located.

The Kinnerasani Project or Dam is a storage reservoir built on the Kinnerasani River in the Godavari Basin at Yanamboil village of Palvoncha Mandal in Bhadradri Kothagudem district.

It was inaugurated in 1966 by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi for Rs. 558.00 lakh. It provides irrigation facilities to farmers and water for thermal power generation to the KTPS at Palvoncha. The dam has a storage capacity of 233 cu.m at a full reservoir level of 407 feet.

The scheme is intended to provide irrigation water to 10,000 acres of ayacut benefiting Palvoncha and Burgampahad mandals of Bhadradri Kothagudem district.

The Forest Department has developed a deer park on the way to the dam. Kinnerasani Sanctuary is a haven for exotic wildlife, and tourists enjoy visiting here because they see many animals in their natural habitat.

The river bisects the Kinnerasani Sanctuary and finally joins the Godavari River. The sanctuary is home to Cheetal, Chinkara, Wild Boars, Chaosingas, Sambar, Gaurs, Hyenas, Jackals, Sloth Bears, Tigers, Panthers and Black Bucks. Birds commonly seen in this dammed sanctuary include peacocks, quails, partridges, teals, nukes, spoonbills, wildfowl, and pigeons. Crocodiles also breed in the reservoir and Kinnerasani Island.

Timings and Entry Fees

Kinnerasani Dam is open from here. When you visit here, you should go boating to enhance your experience. If you are willing to meet from 9 AM to 6 PM to stay here, there is a forest guest house here. You can go boating here from 9:30 AM to 1:30 PM and 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM. The cost of boating ranges between INR 50 and INR 400 depending on the type of boat and the number of members. The entry fees for Kinnerasani Dam are as follows:

Best Time to Visit

Since the weather remains hot except for the Southwest monsoon months, the best time to visit this wildlife sanctuary is between June and October. However, please know that most animals rest in their dens as winter approaches.
